Generosity and Blessings
giving your hope and approval

I was listening to Jack Kornfield's lecture on Generosity this morning. It is really beautiful and a great way to spend the morning. Hear it at http://diydharma.org/audio/by/artist/jack_kornfield

What struck me is his intimation that giving ones blessing to another is an act of generosity. All religions from Judaism to Islam, Christianity and all religions in between have their ideology surrounding blessings. But, in a purely secular approach a blessing can simply encompass generosity of giving one’s hope or approval to another.

This brings me to a story I read. There was once a wise woman traveling in the mountains who found a precious stone in a stream. The next day she met another traveler who was hungry, and she opened her bag to share her food. The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked if she might give it to him. She did so without hesitation. The traveler left, rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for a lifetime. But only a few days later he came back to return the stone to the woman who had given it to him.

"I've been thinking," he said, "I know how valuable the stone is, but I'm giving it back in the hope that you can give me something even more precious. I want you to give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me the stone."

We live in a world filled with divisiveness and separation. We are being persuaded to look upon our differences as just that different instead of individualities. Today we can take a moment and celebrate a world of diversity and recognize each person individually without judgment. And while doing this perhaps we can be generous to ourselves with the blessing of unconditional approval.

three chemicals to avoid to cut your cancer risk

Statistically speaking, cancer is the number two cause of death, just after heart disease. Do you know what contributes to cancer that is found in your body and environment? Our hormones, for both men and women. Women have a 1 in 8 lifetime chance of getting cancer. Hormones have many roles in our body, beyond the sex hormones, from regulating your metabolism, to blood pressure, water conservation and more. Most hormones are released from glands in your body, but there are chemicals that act like fake hormones, called xenoestrogens. These chemicals can come into your body by using products that are made with the following:

  1. Parabens- a perservative found in many personal care products, shampoos, lotions, etc.
  2. Phthalates-found in plastics, ie water bottles, some personal care products, vinyl flooring.
  3. Bisphenol A-found in lining of cans, toys, and plastics.

Many women have been placed on HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy), to treat symptoms associated with menopause. Unfortunately, sometimes this can do more harm than good, as noted in the “Million Women Study” from Cancer Research UK, showing an increase in cancer rates, of 1 in 4. There are alternatives to HRT, talk to a local holistic doctor and get your hormones tested.

For both men and women look at your household and kitchen products, along with personal care items to avoid these 3 harmful ingredients. Choose items that are labeled “Paraben Free” etc. Also, think outside the box, hormones can be found in food too! Animals these days are injected with growth hormone, and more in attempts to increase size for more profits. Buying organic food is best when possible, including eggs, hormone free meats, and milk. The Environmental Working Group makes a list called   “The Dirty Dozen”  which names the crops that are the most heavily pesticided, so if you have to make a choice of organic or not, definitely consult this list first.

Spending Time in Nature

Because we instinctively know that nature is good for us on many levels, it’s not unusual to feel powerfully drawn to it.

In this modern age, we spend so much time indoors, focused on the busyness of our lives and disconnected from the earth. But much of what we truly need can only be found under the naked sky, alongside tall trees, on open plains, or in the sound of running water. Spending time in nature allows us to commune with other living beings and to find comfort in the nurturing embrace of Mother Earth. You can’t help but experience a different sense of self while walking in a wood or traversing a mountainside. Being in nature connects us to the earth, grounding us as we walk, unhindered by concrete, upon her. Surrounded by other living beings, both bigger and smaller than we are, we remember that human beings are simply one form of life in this vast universe.

Even if you live in a city or find it difficult to travel to a forest or the countryside, there are a myriad ways to reconnect with nature. When you step out of your door each morning, pause for a minute and close your eyes long enough to let your senses absorb your surroundings. Listen and breathe deeply, until you hear the wind rustling through branches, smell rain on damp grass, and see the reflection of leaves brushing up against windowpanes. If you have time, crouch down and closely examine any nearby grass and soil. The sights, sounds, smells, and sensations we experience that are part of nature can remind us of all the gifts Mother Earth grants us each day.

Spending time connecting with nature nourishes the soul, reminds you that you are never truly alone, and renews you by attuning you to the earth’s natural rhythms. Taking a walk under the stars or feeling the wind on your face may be all it takes for you to reconnect with nature. Remember, you are as much a part of nature as are the leaves on a tree or water bubbling in a brook

Nothing goes better with barbecue ribs that coleslaw. This may sound peculiar but, my favorite coleslaw is KFC but, that has over 12 grams of added sugar. No way! Here's a version of the KFC coleslaw without all the added sugar. I dare you to tell the difference. Bona appetit.

8 cups finely diced cabbage (about 1 head)
1/4 cup diced carrot
2 tablespoons minced onions
1/4 cup Fructevia, Steviva Blend or a dash Steviva Brands Pure Stevia Powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1/4 cup milk
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup buttermilk
1 1/2 tablespoons white vinegar
2 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice

Cabbage and carrots must be finely diced. (I use fine shredder disc on food processor) .

Pour cabbage and carrot mixture into large bowl and stir in minced onions.

Using regular blade on food processor process remaining ingredients until smooth.

Pour over vegetable mixture and mix thoroughly.

Cover bowl and refrigerate several hours or overnight before serving.
