5 tips on picking yourself up and dusting yourself off

There's an old Irish proverb that I was taught at a young age after having my ass handed to me by a kid on the playground. “It's is not what you're going to do when your down on the ground but, what you going to do when you get back up”. This has stuck with me throughout my life. Lord knows I have been knocked on the ground my share of times but, something keeps propping me back up and getting me back in the game. Everybody gets sand kicked in their face at some time in their lives but here are five proven techniques to not let it get the better of you.

•  You are not alone – Everybody person who reaches for the stars eventually gets knocked back down to the earth. It's the nature of things. Look at Donald Trump… ok, let's not but, Abraham Lincoln had to claim personal bankruptcy twice before becoming one of our greatest presidents. The same seeds of greatness that were in him are in you.

•  Everything temporary – On a particularly low point in my life my mom once told me the “ the darkest hour is just before dawn”. True story. Most people get knocked down and think that game is over. Well it is not. The best is yet to come. God's delays are not Gods denials. Recognize that every situation is never permanent and with tenacity you will emerge stronger than before.

•  Accept a helping hand – Like with my mom's words of wisdom and my dad's occasional help with a few bucks there is always an outreached hand ready and waiting to pull you out of the muck. You just have to look for it and then be open and receptive to taking it. It's out there, be confident in that.

•  Be a force to be reckoned with – In by Sun Tzu's The Art of War it is taught when you are at your strongest appear your weakest and when you are at your weakest appear your strongest. Fake it until you make it. When you pick yourself up, dust yourself off and wipe away the tears raise your fists and get ready for round two be fiercer then you were before. Remember Rocky Balboa? He was down but, never out.

•  Pass it forward – Remember the helping hand? Now that you are back on your two feet it is time to lend a hand to somebody else who has gotten knocked down. By writing this article for you, that is essentially what I am doing. So, share it. This is a must and creates good Karma for the next time you have your ass handed to you.

So you've decided to start biking. Now what? Well, the first thing on your agenda should be figuring out which bike is “right” for you. The styles and options for bikes can be pretty overwhelming. Here are a few thoughts to keep in mind when searching for a bike to suit you.

Style, ability and price are all important factors to consider when selecting the best bike for you.

Which bike you choose will depend on your style. I'm not talking fashion here. I'm referring to the style of biking you plan to do. The main styles are road bikes, mountain bikes, hybrid bikes, and cruising bikes.

Road Bikes are meant for going long distances, fast, and are intended for the more serious racers. An excellent example of a great road bike is the Trek bicycle which was first built by hand in 1976. To give you a visual, these bikes have very skinny tires and are often seen being ridden by racers hunched over the bent handle bars, zipping past everybody. These bikes are popular in numerous cycling events, including the annual American Diabetes Tour de Cure.

Mountain Bikes are very durable and versatile. You can ride them in comfort on the road and off. They have wide tires and are built to last. You sit up straight on these bikes which may be the reason most beginner and intermediate riders choose this style.

Hybrid bikes are in-between mountain and road bicycles. Essentially they are like a mountain bike with a thinner wheel and meant to go faster for shorter distances on pavement. Hybrids are great if you're dodging through downtown traffic.

Cruisers are just as they sound, made for an easy-going, relaxed ride. They feature wide tires, often have a simple single gear, and upright handle bars. My favorite feature is the extra wide seat, making it much more comfortable than other bike styles.

Your biking ability is important when purchasing a bike. As a beginner, you will want to work with the salesperson to figure out what sort of bike will suit your needs. Make sure you try out a few different bikes to get a 'feel' for which one fits. Don't get too fancy on your first bike. Keep it simple and practical. As you gain experience, you can challenge yourself with more complex bikes.

Bikes are kind of like cars when it comes to buying. Bicycles can range from five dollars at a garage sale, to over $114,000! Yes it's true. There was a diamond and gold bicycle that cost $114,000, designed to commemorate Lance Armstrong's victory of 7 Tour de France events. Realistically though, in the current market, most beginning cyclers are happy with a bike in the $300 to $800 range.

Style, ability and price are all important factors when searching for the best bike for you. Keep these ideas in mind and happy biking!

Spending Time in Nature

Because we instinctively know that nature is good for us on many levels, it’s not unusual to feel powerfully drawn to it.

In this modern age, we spend so much time indoors, focused on the busyness of our lives and disconnected from the earth. But much of what we truly need can only be found under the naked sky, alongside tall trees, on open plains, or in the sound of running water. Spending time in nature allows us to commune with other living beings and to find comfort in the nurturing embrace of Mother Earth. You can’t help but experience a different sense of self while walking in a wood or traversing a mountainside. Being in nature connects us to the earth, grounding us as we walk, unhindered by concrete, upon her. Surrounded by other living beings, both bigger and smaller than we are, we remember that human beings are simply one form of life in this vast universe.

Because we instinctively know that nature is good for us on many levels, it’s not unusual to feel powerfully drawn to it. Even if you live in a city or find it difficult to travel to a forest or the countryside, there are a myriad ways to reconnect with nature. When you step out of your door each morning, pause for a minute and close your eyes long enough to let your senses absorb your surroundings. Listen and breathe deeply, until you hear the wind rustling through branches, smell rain on damp grass, and see the reflection of leaves brushing up against windowpanes. If you have time, crouch down and closely examine any nearby grass and soil. The sights, sounds, smells, and sensations we experience that are part of nature can remind us of all the gifts Mother Earth grants us each day.

Spending time connecting with nature nourishes the soul, reminds you that you are never truly alone, and renews you by attuning you to the earth’s natural rhythms. Taking a walk under the stars or feeling the wind on your face may be all it takes for you to reconnect with nature. Remember, you are as much a part of nature as are the leaves on a tree or water bubbling in a brook

We all know we are no angels but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be entitled to Angel Food Cake! This light and airy low glycemic and high protein cake satisfies chocolate lovers without tons of calories or carbs. Enjoy it plain or dress it up with fresh fruit, custard or a whipped topping. Since Steviva Brands products are now certified Kosher this is perfect for Passover.

½ cup tapioca flour or arrowroot
¼ cup cocoa
1 cup Fructevia, Steviva Blend or a dash Steviva Brands Pure Stevia Powder
10 egg whites
¼ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon lemon juice


Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Sift together tapioca flour or arrowroot, cocoa and half of the Fructevia, Steviva Blend or a tiny dash Steviva Brands Pure Stevia Powder.

In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites on low speed, slowly adding salt and lemon juice. Increase the speed. As soon as whites reach the soft-peak stage, begin adding remaining Fructevia, Steviva Blend or a tiny dash to taste Steviva Brands Pure Stevia Powder, a little at a time. Beat until whites are glossy and stiff.

Sift dry ingredients ¼ at a time over the whites, folding them in after each addition.

Spoon batter into a 10-inch ungreased angel food cake tube pan with a removable bottom or a 10-inch bundt pan. (Do not use a pan with a no-stick surface and do not grease the pan.) Tap the pan once on the counter to help distribute batter.

Place pan on the middle rack in preheated oven and bake for 45 minutes. Edges will pull from the sides of the pan.

Place cake (still in the pan) upside down on a rack. Traditionally, the pan is inverted on the neck of a wine bottle or funnel to cool. After an hour or more remove from pan and enjoy.
