A Buddhist teacher was instructing new monks on the importance of breath. After the instruction was over one young monk came to the instructor and said he was unable to find the importance of breath. The instructor dunked the young monks head in a tub of water for a long period of time. Once the monk stopped struggling the instructor let him up to catch his breath and said ”I'll bet breath is important to you now”.
Breathing is life. It is one of our most vital functions. One of the Five Principles of Yoga is Pranayama or Breathing Exercise which promotes proper breathing. Proper Breathing, in a Yogic point of view, is to bring more oxygen to the blood and to the brain, and to control prana or the vital life energy. Pranayama - the science of breath control; consists a series of exercises intended to meet these needs and to keep the body in vibrant
The average person reaches peak respiratory function and lung capacity in their mid 20's. Then they begin to loose respiratory capacity: between 9% and 27% for every decade of life. three things to do while on vacation
The sun is shinning and the heat is on. Summer is here and to be celebrated. With celebrations come occasions which puts us out of our usual routine: trips to the beach, weddings, bbq's, and other travel. By usual routine, this means healthy eating, workouts, taking supplements and other things that we do for our own health and well being. Someone once said that it takes 3 weeks to form a habit, and only 3 days to break it!
If you are going on that upcoming vacation, do your best to maintain your healthy habits. Remember it is the consistency in life that we take with our actions, that will compound into the effect we are looking for. Perhaps you started walking, lifting weights, or decided to cut out sugar, or start taking fish oil, all of these habits, will take some time to show their results, just as a seed planted in a garden needs time to sprout and grow.
Here are 3 things to do while you're away to keep breaking healthy habits at bay:
1. Do at least 15 min of fitness: Depending on location and what is around you, remember you don't need a gym to get in some exercise. 1 minute of holding Plank (push up position, with staying in hovering position), 15 push ups, 30 jumping jacks, 30 sit ups, and 15 tri-cep dips can all be done in a small space with just a chair to do the dips on, repeat this sequence. Walking counts too!
2. Take one supplement: If you are taking a dietary supplement(s) that have been recommended to you by a health care provider, dose out the days that you would need and take in a pill-box or small plastic baggie. Keeping up with your compliance will allow the benefits to kick in. Avoid taking things that need refrigeration (fish oil and probiotics) if that will cause difficulty if in long transit times.
3. Cheat 1x daily: Ideally a lean and green diet is advocated for, but for the summer celebrations, try to limit the high calorie or carb meal, if you must indulge, try to eat just one of those meals per day, rather than a whole day of being glutinous.
Keep up on these small actions and share these with the family and friends you will be spending time with so that together you can be healthy and stay healthy with your habits!

Sitting With Feelings
Sitting with our feelings is the best thing we can do for ourselves rather than stuffing them deep inside.
It can take great courage to really sit with our feelings, allowing ourselves to surrender to their powerful energies. All too often we set our feelings aside, thinking we will deal with them later. If we don’t deal with them, we end up storing them in our minds and bodies and this is when anxiety and other health issues can arise. Denying what our bodies want to feel can lead to trouble now or down the line, which is why being in the thick of our feelings, no matter how scary it seems, is really the best thing we can do for ourselves.
One of the reasons we tend to hide or push aside our feelings is that we live in a culture that has not traditionally supported emotional awareness. However, as the connection between mind and body--our emotions and our physical health-- becomes clearer, awareness of the importance of feeling our feelings has grown. There are many books, classes, workshops and retreats that can help us on our way to emotional intelligence. We can also trust in our own ability to process what comes up when it comes up. If sadness arises, we can notice its presence and welcome it, noting where in our bodies we feel it, and allowing ourselves to express it through tears or a quiet turning inward.
When we simply allow ourselves to fully feel our feelings as they come, we tend to let them go easily. This is all we are required to do; our feelings simply want to be felt. We often complicate the situation by applying mental energy in the form of analysis, when all we really need is to allow, as the earth allows the rain to fall upon it. As the rain falls, the earth responds in a multitude of ways, sometimes emptying out to form a great canyon, sometimes soaking it up to nourish an infinitude of plants. In the same way, the deeper purpose of our feelings is to transform the terrain of our inner world, sometimes creating space for more feelings to flow, sometimes providing sustenance for growth. All we need to do is allow the process by relaxing, opening, and receiving the bounty of our emotions.

25 cucumbers, thinly sliced
6 onions, thinly sliced
2 green bell peppers, diced
3 cloves garlic, chopped
1/2 cup salt
3 cups cider vinegar
2 cups Fructevia, Steviva Blend 1 teaspoon Steviva Brands Pure Stevia Powder
2 tablespoons mustard seed
1 1/2 teaspoons celery seed
1/2 teaspoon whole cloves
1 tablespoon ground turmeric
In a large bowl, mix together cucumbers, onions, green bell peppers, garlic and salt. Allow to stand approximately 3 hours.
In a large saucepan, mix the cider vinegar, Fructevia, Steviva Blend or Steviva Brands Pure Stevia Powder, mustard seed, celery seed, whole cloves and turmeric. Bring to a boil.
Drain liquid from the cucumber mixture. Stir the mixture into the boiling vinegar mixture. Remove from heat shortly before the combined mixtures return to boil.
Transfer to sterile containers. Seal and chill in the refrigerator until serving.
