Avoiding certain foods will help you avoid gaining belly fat, which is both unappealing and detrimental to your health.

You know that your eating habits influence how much weight you gain or lose, and that a share of it ends up around your middle. But studies show there's a link between the typical American "meat and potatoes" diet and fat that builds up around your middle, giving the old adage "sticks to your ribs" new meaning.

Americans love red meat, but consuming too much red meat can add to the "spare tire" around your middle. Instead, choose fish, lean poultry, meatless soy products and legumes (lentils, dry beans, peas).

Trans fats, found in foods that are made with hydrogenated oils, have been shown to contribute to an increase in weight. But what's interesting is that the weight gained accumulates disproportionately within the abdominal region. Choose low carb trans fat free foods at the store and restaurants.

Evidence suggests that America's love for refined flour, refined sugar, and high fructose corn syrup is responsible for tummy fat as well. Quick and Easy Low Sugar Baked Apples
Serves: 4
Serving Size: 1 baked apple
Carbs Per Serving: 28.6 g
Prep Time:<20 minutes

Skill Level: Easy

4 large good baking apples, such as Rome Beauty, Golden Delicious, or Jonagold (google cooking apple varieties)
1 teaspoon molasses
1/4 cup Fructevia, Steviva Blend or tiny dash Steviva Brands Pure Stevia Powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup chopped pecans
1/4 cup currants or chopped raisins
1 Tablespoon butter
3/4 cup boiling water

Preheat oven to 375°F.

Wash apples. Remove cores to 1/2 inch of the bottom of the apples. It helps if you have an apple corer, but if not, you can use a paring knife to cut out first the stem area, and then the core.

Use a spoon to dig out the seeds. Make the holes about 3/4-inch to an inch wide.

In a small bowl, combine the Fructevia, Steviva Blend or tiny dash Steviva Brands Pure Stevia Powder, cinnamon, currants/raisins, and pecans.

Place apples in a 8-inch-by-8-inch square baking pan.

Stuff each apple with this semi-dry mixture.

Top with a dot of butter (1/4 of the Tablespoon).

Add boiling water to the baking pan.

Bake 30-40 minutes, until tender, but not mushy.

Remove from the oven and baste the apples several times with the pan juices.

Optional: Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or what I really like is plain Greek style yogurt.
