Never Never Never Never Give Up. This Is a Journey, Not a Destination.

I know many of you wonder if I actually return each an every email that is sent to me. The answer is yes... short of SPAM, I do reply to every email. I usually never post them but, I did get one recently that I felt needed posting. I got this email from a woman whose name I will keep confidential but, it was a real cry for encouragement I wanted to pass along our dialog to you because I think it is something we all need to hear at some time in our lives.

Dear Thom:

I have never replied to your emails. I have read them, been inspired by them and laughed out loud at some of them. I am writing now because I went without sugar for 3 days completely, I am a vegetarian although I do eat fish. I don't get a lot of exercise and my portions were way to large. I read the following back in January and I did as instructed. I will admit that I did feel better but it got boring. It said that after 3 days you would begging to "burn " fat stores. I don't think that I lost weight. I don't remember how I started eating sugar again but I ate things I didn't even like. I have gained more weight and I am feeling very discouraged.

Thank you for your email.

Let me tell you from my own experience; getting off sugar, managing weight and getting fit is totally a journey rather than a destination. My weight has yo-yo'd up and down my entire life. In just the past 4 months I have totally committed to getting fit. I am 44 and I want the last half of my life to be the very very best years.

I have found that weight loss and getting fit can be a vicious cycle. The more weight you gain the worse you feel, the worse you feel the more you eat and the more you eat the more weight you gain. This can be a real problem.

If you really really really really want to get off sugar and get skinny as well as fit this is what I suggest.


2.) Buddy up with somebody. Support each other in eating well and exercise. And when one of you is slipping be there to help the other person out. It can be a friend, a family member, a trainer(the best option)... anybody who shares your vision. You do not need to walk this path alone.

3.) Create a spread sheet and keep track of the calorie, carb and fat counts of everything you eat . And I mean everything. Within that spreadsheet keep track of all of the exercise you are getting and the calorie burn. Never miss a day. Make it a habit. I have a great spreadsheet I use and I can send to you. Just ask. 4.) Watch what you eat and limit your portions. Do not self medicate with food. Only eat when you are hungry not when you are anxious or depressed. But, first and foremost never starve yourself. This will lock up your metabolism. Remember this! Eat less more often. Eat 6 small meals per day.

5.) Exercise daily. Join a gym. Get a trainer. Go for a walk. Make it a routine. Start your day that way and no other way. Let it become who you are. You are the person who walks a mile every day first thing in the morning or you are the person that is in the gym every morning by 9:00 AM.

6.) Don't weigh yourself every day. Weigh yourself once a month. remember this is a journey not a destination.

7.) Drink a lot of water. I mean a lot. 96 ounces at least. Yes... you will be peeing every 15 minutes but, you will also be firing up your metabolism and flushing the toxins and fat from your system.

8.) Above all... NEVER GIVE UP! You are to valuable and precious to give up on. You are worth it and you will believe it when you start seeing results over the next few months. Plus... I will not let you give up... nor will your partner, family or friends if you get them involved.
