Generosity and Blessings
giving your hope and approval

I was listening to Jack Kornfield's lecture on Generosity this morning. It is really beautiful and a great way to spend the morning. Hear it at http://diydharma.org/audio/by/artist/jack_kornfield

What struck me is his intimation that giving ones blessing to another is an act of generosity. All religions from Judaism to Islam, Christianity and all religions in between have their ideology surrounding blessings. But, in a purely secular approach a blessing can simply encompass generosity of giving one’s hope or approval to another.

This brings me to a story I read. There was once a wise woman traveling in the mountains who found a precious stone in a stream. The next day she met another traveler who was hungry, and she opened her bag to share her food. The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked if she might give it to him. She did so without hesitation. The traveler left, rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for a lifetime. But only a few days later he came back to return the stone to the woman who had given it to him.

"I've been thinking," he said, "I know how valuable the stone is, but I'm giving it back in the hope that you can give me something even more precious. I want you to give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me the stone."

We live in a world filled with divisiveness and separation. We are being persuaded to look upon our differences as just that different instead of individualities. Today we can take a moment and celebrate a world of diversity and recognize each person individually without judgment. And while doing this perhaps we can be generous to ourselves with the blessing of unconditional approval.

Thank you for your patronage.

Have a sensational week

FITNESS (special cycling series)

Why Cycling Helps You Meet Your Weight Goals
cycling is your logical low impact option

Cycling is a prime example of the cardiovascular activity essential to losing weight. Whether you have a brand new Trek bicycle and plan to test yourself in the American Diabetes Tour de Cure, or you have a rusty old hand-me-down bike and hope to make it around the block. Either way, cycling is an excellent way for you to get fit, build muscle, burn calories, and lose weight. Here are a few reasons why:

Stick-To-Factor - The 'stick-to-factor' is the ability to stick with a fitness activity. Cycling has an amazing 'stick-to-factor.' It's really hard to make an excuse not to go biking. If it's raining out, you can ride a stationary bike. If you are really tired, you can go shorter and with less intensity. Finally, you can change your route whenever you like, bikes can go just about anywhere. So there is zero chance of your getting bored. By sticking with cycling you are going to lose weight...period!

Logical - Logic says that if you exert more energy consistently, you will lose weight. By adding cycling to your daily routine, you are using more energy than you normally would. If you'd like to build muscle while you're burning extra calories, you can simply increase your resistance. Your body sacrifices the extra fat to fuel your increased energy requirements. The more you bike, the more fat you lose.

Versatile - Cycling is one of the most versatile cardio activities you can do. There are so many different types of cycling, that you are always able to challenge yourself.

You can start with a stationary bike and then move to a mountain bike for regular riding. Then, how about checking out a few specialty bikes and introducing yourself to some racing? If you're really adventurous, why not try some extreme mountain biking? These bikers get geared up from head to toe in protective equipment and bomb it down steep trails from the tops of mountains! Talk about crazy...fun crazy though.

Bottom line, cycling helps you build muscle, burn calories, and lose weight. It's pretty simple. Get a bike and commit to cycling. You'll feel great and lose weight. Guaranteed!

Don't have a bike? Register to win a Trek and get $10 to use in the Steviva Store: http://www.steviva.com/news/trek-bike-sweepstakes/

Being Smart In The Summer Sun
The Natural Skin Protection Guide

School is out, work still continues for most, and life routines maybe being shifted. The natural rhythm of summer is to slow down cerebrally and gear up physically, with some fun in the sun. This will be your short guide for sun protection suggestions, from a holistic perspective.

We are probably all aware that sun can burn the skin, and thus can be a contributing cause for carcinogenic (cancer) causing processes to occur in our body. Cancer is complex and is usually multi-factorial, not just from one cause. Sun burns can cause free radical damage, but if one has a high level of antioxidants to combat it, the damage done may not be so detrimental. One can even get tested to measure the level of skin caroteniods, one type of antioxidant, with a simple one minute scan of your palm.

The skin cancers that are mostly correlated to be partly caused by sun damage include basal cell carcinoma, the mildest form of cancer, and squamous cell carcinoma, both of which are treatable. The use of sunscreen is known to prevent the direct damage to the top layer of the skin. Interestingly, if the sunscreen penetrates into the skin, it can cause damage as well, on a deeper level, leading to malignant melanoma , the most deadly cancer, and one in which every hour someone dies from

Depending on your skin type and length of time of sun exposure a natural sunscreen may be smart. These will use minerals, such as zinc or titanium oxide, to block out the rays. Take a look at The Daily Green to find natural sunscreens that work and are affordable. These protect against aging via the UVA rays, and burn with the UVB rays. (A for aging, B for burn) When reading labels SPF (Sun Protective Factor) indicates only the time of protection against UVB rays, and contrary to belief of some a SPF 30 v.s. 50 does not offer more protection, just longer. The model is based on burn time of being 10 minutes and multiplying that by the SPF, which will prolong the time it takes one to burn. For example SPF 15 will give someone 150 minutes in the sun until burning is a possibility.

Caution on sunscreen ingredients, many commercial varieties contain carcinogenic or toxic ingredients. Here is a short list of what to avoid, refer to The Environmental Working Group for detailed lists.

  • Phthalates
  • Parabens
  • Propylene/Butylene Glycol
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

There are debates weather one should rely on the sun for Vitamin D, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) they don't recommend going into the sun without protection with a sun block or sun screen, and have a position statement stating the Vitamin D should be obtained from dietary sources; salmon, tuna, and mackerel being the best with egg yolks containing a small amount According to both AAD and National Institutes of Health, the dietary form and the kind made from the sun in your skin both have to be activated by the liver, therefore dietary sources of Vitamin D should not be viewed as inferior, but for those who live in places that lack the sun, I think we like to view this type as superior!

Remember your skin is the largest organ, skin conditions even can be a sign of what is going on inside. Our internal and external selves are interconnected, like the saying “as above, so below”. Being smart in the summer means that you use non-toxic/natural sunscreen when needed, wear protective gear (sunglasses & hat), as well as take breaks in the shade, and of course hydrate. Take care and love the skin your in!

You Have The Power To Succeed
Max Steingart

Success on any major scale requires you to accept responsibility. Your life to a large extent is what you make of it. Nothing will happen by itself. It will all come your way once you understand that you have to make it come your way.

Choose the thoughts and actions that will lead you to success. Nobody can do it for you.
Only you can make it happen. You're the only one that has to live your life.

The day you take complete responsibility for yourself, the day you stop making any excuses, that's the day you start on the road to success.

You have the power to succeed at anything. The power to fulfill your dreams is within you.

Focused Value
Quality vs. Quantity

It is not the quantity of time that matters, but the quality that you experience during each moment.

We live in an age of quantity. The media shapes us with the notion that larger, faster, and more are often synonymous with better. We are told that we need to find more time, more possessions, and more love to be truly happy. A smaller quantity of anything that is high in quality will almost always be more satisfying. A single piece of our favorite chocolate or a thin spread of freshly made preserves can satisfy us more than a full bucket of a product that we aren’t very fond of. Similarly, one fulfilling experience can eclipse many empty moments strung together. It is not the quantity of time that matters, but the quality that you experience during each moment. Every minute is an opportunity to love yourself and others, develop confidence and self-respect, and exhibit courage.

Ultimately, quality can make life sweeter. When you focus on quality, all your life experiences can be meaningful. A modest portion of good, healthy food can nourish and satisfy you on multiple levels and, when organically grown, nourish the earth as well. Likewise, a few hours of deep, restful slumber will leave you feeling more refreshed than a night’s worth of frequently interrupted sleep. A few minutes spent with a loved one catching up on the important details about family, work, or community can carry more meaning than two hours spent watching television together.

Often, in the pursuit of quantity we cheat ourselves of quality. Then again, quantity also plays a significant role in our lives. Certain elements, such as hugs, kisses, abundance, and love, are best had in copious amounts that are high in quality. But faced with the choice between a single, heartfelt grin and a lifetime of empty smiles, most would, no doubt, choose the former. Ultimately, it is not how much you live or have or do but what you make of each moment that counts
