In search of the authentic self
the pathway to eradicating shame and embracing life

Inspiration comes to all of us in different fashions and at different times. Inspiration can come to us like a hammer on the thumb or a fragrance carried on a gentle summer breeze. Once it touches you it touches deeply and resonates into the tenderest places in the heart. I have recently been the beneficiary of this gift.

A last month I went to watch My Morning Jacket http://www.mymorningjacket.com/gogo/ play an outdoor concert. They were nothing less than amazing. A band from Louisville Kentucky they are one of my favorites. Their genre is hard to describe. All I can suggest if to give them a listen.

Equally interesting was the audience. It was a mix of hippies, GenXer's and all people in between. The crowd was a tapestry of color and sensation moving in waves to the music. There were some in the audience that could not contain their exuberance and shamelessly broke into dance. It was beautiful and moving to see. They were engaged in an uninhibited expression of joyous rapture. A range of emotions and thought ran over me. I was envious at their ability to allow themselves to indulge without being self-conscious. The rabbit hole opened. Self-conscious, a consciousness of self; what does that all mean? How does consciousness of self prevent us from being our true authentic self? This led me in search of my true and authentic self.

The root of preventing us from expressing who we really are is shame. Shame is nothing we were born with but something that was gifted to us by others being critical of our behavior. Overcoming shame can take years. But, as with a garden, the weeds of shame must be pulled in order for the fruits of our garden to flourish. Here are a few tips in overcoming shame:

•  Shame is perfectly normal. Everybody experiences it at some time. Shame is nothing to be ashamed of. Accept this and move through it.

•  Love and accept yourself exactly the way you. Self-acceptance is the first step in overcoming shame.

•  Develop trust. Trust yourself and trust others. Visualize yourself living is a world that is safe.

•  Journal your experiences and talk to a professional.

Before long if you continue to practice you find yourself being true to your real self without shame. Perhaps one of the best ways of finding our true selves is to bear witness to others being their true selves without shame and mirror their behavior. In turn, allowing ourselves to shamelessly sing, dance and express who we are with true authenticity will always inspire others making the circle complete.

Finding Others To Share Your Ride
partnering up for the perfect ride

The crazy world-wide web provides lots of sources to find cyclists to ride with you. Many different sites have cycling groups, blogs and discussions where you can find others that share your passion for riding. One I found particularly useful has been MeetUp.com. There are thousands of groups at each level of enthusiasm and experience. If meetup.com does work for you, here are a few others that you may find helpful:

Local Gym - It makes sense. Here, you're more likely to find a group of cyclists that meet regularly to become one with the pavement. If not, it would be a great opportunity to start a bike group or find someone who would like to join you on your cycling adventures.

At Work - Another great spot to find someone to ride with is your place of employment. I'm sure you can convince a few people to skip out with you during lunch break for a quick ride. Or better yet, find a time before or after work to get a longer ride in. There's nothing but good with this idea.

Friends/Family - Have you thought about asking any of your friends or family? Maybe you could convince them if you picked up a couple of brand new Trek bicycles. Surely you've got a sister, brother, aunt or uncle that has been complaining about not being in shape. This is your chance to help them get moving!

Locating Local Races - By participating in local races, you are bound to run across a few people to ride with. The hugely popular American Diabetes Tour de Cure is a great place to start. This cycling benefit is held in over 80 cities annually. Upon registering, there may also be some information on bike groups in the area. There are always people looking to get in some extra cycling.

Local Groups - Your city will have lots of local groups that are bound to have people that like to cycle. Search them out and you will have your pick of the lot.

Bike Shops - Shops always have information on people who are passionate about biking. Normally, you can find a group and connecting up with a few groups will lead you to many different cycling partners.

If you are passionate about riding, you will find cyclists that share this feeling. By using the sources above, you will be able to locate great people that enjoy zipping across the pavement just as much as you do.

The fountain of youth has been found! It isn't a magical elixir either. What is it then? The power of being positive or optimistic in your life can translates to a multitude of health benefits, from increased life span to decreased risk of cardiovascular death, which is the number one killer in the America .

‘Mind-body medicine is now scientifically proven,' says Herbert Benson, a cardiologist and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School who is considered a pioneer in the field.” Take that analogy of seeing the glass half empty or full, which can act as a test of your level of optimism or pessimism. This can have an impact on how our body functions, either attributing to health enhancement or decline.

Many desire to be forever young; more than 4 million people in the USA will turn 50 in the year 2011. At fifty or any age you have all that you had in youth and more! This is youth span, which "...Refers only to the number of years we live in good health, with high energy, strength and mobility, and with vigorous mental, sensory and sexual powers."   This can only be achieved by looking at the process of change in our lives in a positive manner and by doing positive things for our bodies. Here are my top ways to stay positive!

  1. Dance: Music can have a definite effect on our mood, there is nothing like tuning in to your favorite beat and shaking off the stress! You've heard the saying “dance like no one is watching!” If you don't like to dance do something else to get you physical at your core, laughing can do this too!
  2. Gratitude: Find something to be grateful for each day, focus on that for a moment. Consider a gratitude journal, either hand written or on your computer. I like to list 5 things I'm feeling grateful for in my life on a regular basis.
  3. Educate: Explore yourself, your mind, body and spirit. Read a good book that makes you want to improve yourself, and/or seek the help of a professional. Find out why, when possible things are they way they are. Sometimes though, we can't know everything, and we must accept this too.
  4. Diet: What you put in your mouth does affect your mood. While sugar maybe “the other white powder” and you will get a high (blood sugar levels), you will also likely crash and get addicted. Eating fruits to satisfy your sweet tooth. Choose to include protein and vegetables at every meal.
  5. Support: Our society is more connected in some ways and disconnected in others. Take time to meet in person with friends regularly, and choose friends that look for the good in life and help you through your challenges. No one ever got success alone, just as there is no “I” in team.

Opening Your Heart
finding your pathway to compassion

It is not easy to have an open heart in a world that offers us a full plate of experiences. This life gives us much joy, love, and light, but it also shows us a fair amount of pain, sadness, and suffering. When our hearts are open, we take everything into ourselves, and we are deeply affected by what we see. We do not hold ourselves separate from the pain of others. In addition, our own personal disappointments may begin to take their toll. We may feel small, alone, and overwhelmed. Most of us may feel like we are not up to the task of living with our hearts open, and we might begin to close down, little by little, so that we can get through our days without having to feel too much.

One thing that can help us turn this situation around is an awareness of the power of empathy. To open our hearts to another person’s suffering is a revolutionary act that has energetic implications. Many experiments with meditation have proven that we can reach far beyond the boundaries of our selves and heal others when our hearts are open. Heart meditations awaken this power and heal the person meditating as well as anyone who is the focus of the meditation.

You may want to experiment with this the next time you see or hear something painful. Instead of shuttering your emotions, resolve to hold your feelings in your heart. Tap into the divine energy of universal love that resides in your heart. This energy makes you powerful, for it is your protection that will transmute the pain of others. Breathe deeply, and let yourself feel the pain of the situation, knowing that your heart is big and strong enough to hold it. As you breathe, visualize healing light emanating from your heart and touching all that are suffering. You will heal your heart in the process.

1 cup milk
1 cup yogurt
1 cup ice cubes
1 teaspoon lemon zest
1/2 cup orange juice
