You Only Have Thirty Days To Live
doing what we really want to do

The other day I was working at my desk and had a nice big stretch. Arms in the air, back arched I scratched under my arm. That's weird… that feels like a lump. I felt under my other arm and guess what. No lump. I felt under the first arm and guess what… yes, a lump; right on my lymph node. Naturally my mind immediately went to cancer. Oh my god, I have cancer. Words no person ever wants to mutter. It was around eleven o'clock. There was nothing I could do about it but, research the internet. Twenty minutes later I was convinced I have lymphoma and there was not chance of surviving this. I laid in bed all night, sleepless, coming to terms with the end. The timing was really crappy. Things are going so well. I have so much left to do. Then I thought about what this would entail; the side effects of all the meds, the time consuming doctor visits, hair loss, the invasive surgery, just to bargain for a few months of precious life. I have a complete new respect and empathy for people whom battle cancer. Because that is what it is and it is likely a battle that cannot be won. It takes a lot of work and even more hope. I asked myself, if this is truly my demise, am I doing exactly what I want to. What would I change?

The next day I visited the doctor. He examined it, drew blood and was reassuring. A few days later the results of the blood test came back and everything appears pretty normal. We are going to keep an eye on it and see what happens with me and my lump.

The truth is, we all are heading to the same end. Nobody escapes it. No matter how much money you make, how much power you have, celebrity or not or who you know. For instance Steve Jobs. Our mortality is the common thread that connects us all. It is what makes us human. What counts is what we do with the time we have here. I have promised myself that I will:

•  Take more emotional risks

•  Take time to celebrate everyday as a gift

•  Watch more sunrises

•  Spend more time outside

•  Make an effort to make the lives of people around me better

•  Be completely honest with myself and others

•  Breathe deeply

•  Smile more

•  Laugh more

• Give more

I can keep going but, you get the idea.

Today imagine you have only a month to live. Decide if what you are doing in this very moment is the thing you want to do, if you have surrounded yourself with the people you want to be around or whatever. Start making a list and then live by it like there is no tomorrow.

Have an excellent day.

YOUR MIND

Desire is The Fire of Your Life
Max Steingart

If you want something badly enough, you're sure to get it. Your desires will in time externalize themselves into concrete fact.

Obstacles don't matter very much. Pain or other circumstances can be there. But if you want to do something bad enough, you'll find a way to get it done.

Your reality forms around your commitment to succeed. If you're willing to pay the price, your circumstances will change. You only have to love a thing greatly to get it.

YOUR BODY

Nourishment
in the form of two timeless tasks

There are some simple things that don't change over time. From the moment you enter this earth until the day you leave, your body still requires nourishment. On your "birth" day, can you think of what it is that gave you life and then sustained it? It was the first breath you took that gave you a life outside the womb. You inhaled a deep diaphragmatic breath that filled your belly with oxygen. This simple thing is what continues our lives, day after day. Surprisingly, if we were to be graded on if we were breathing correctly, did you know most of us would fail? To test yourself, place one hand on your stomach and the other on your chest. Inhale and notice which hand moves first. Is it your top hand or bottom? If you are breathing with your diaphragm it should be your bottom hand that moves first.

The next thing you do after taking a few breaths on from the moment of birth, is you nurse, and get nourished in the form of food. Years later, we still require this, yet again, most people would fail if they were being graded on how and what they ate. Do you eat with the intention that your body is a temple and needs vitamins and nutrients to run efficiently? Or do you eat to satisfy a craving, out of addiction, or worse off to hide from something?

The time will come when one day you take your last breath, but more than likely, you can control that by how you live your life and nourish your body. Each day breathe deeply, and eat to fuel your body furnace, not just to get a full feeling. Think of eating as the foundation for good health. You can save yourself now from a death caused too early because lack of proper nourishment.

Just for today focus on feeding your body oxygen with your breath and nourishing your body with healthy food!

YOUR SPIRIT

A Reason to Smile
Five Minutes to Happiness
by Madisyn Taylor

If you aren't a naturally happy person, take time each day to cultivate that which brings you happiness.

It can be so easy to get caught up in the rigors of modern life that we tend to forget that happiness need not come with stipulations. Happiness becomes something we must schedule and strive for—a hard-won emotion—and then only when we have no worries to occupy our thoughts. In reality, overwhelming joy is not the exclusive province of those with unlimited time and no troubles to speak of. Many of the happiest people on earth are also those coping with the most serious challenges. They have learned to make time for those simple yet superb pleasures that can be enjoyed quickly and easily. Cultivating a happy heart takes no more than five minutes. The resultant delight will be neither complex nor complicated, but it will be profound and will serve as a reminder that there is always a reason to smile.

So much that is ecstasy-inducing can be accomplished in five minutes. Alone, we can enjoy an aromatic cup of our favorite tea, take a stroll through the garden we have created, write about the day's events in a journal, doodle while daydreaming, or breathe deeply while we listen to the silence around us. In the company of a good friend or treasured relative, we can share a few silly jokes, enjoy a waltz around the room, play a fast-paced hand of cards, or reconnect through lighthearted conversation. The key is to first identify what makes us dizzyingly happy. If we do only what we believe should bring us contentment, our five minutes will not be particularly satisfying. When we allow ourselves the freedom to do whatever brings us pleasure, five minutes out of 14 wakeful hours can brighten our lives immeasurably.

It is often when we have the least free time or energy to devote to joy that we need to unwind and enjoy ourselves the most. Making happiness a priority will help you find five minutes every day to indulge in the things that inspire elation within you. Eventually, your happiness breaks will become an established part of your routine. If you start by pursuing activities you already enjoy and then gradually think up new and different ways to fill your daily five minutes of happiness, you will never be without something to smile about.
