Breath In Your Day Deeply
how simply breathing can nourish your body and soul

In sanskrit, the word for breath is the same as the word for life - prana. The first thing you do as you enter this world is to inhale. Your last act in this life is to exhale. When prana leaves the body, we die. The breath is a metaphor for life energy. The breath is seen as an important link between our body, our mind, and our spirit - moving from the purely physical realm, to the mental, to the spiritual.

Breathing is important for two reasons. It is the only means to supply our bodies and its various organs with the supply of oxygen which is vital for our survival. The second function of breathing is that it is one means to get rid of waste products and toxins from the body.

Oxygen is the most vital nutrient for our bodies. It is essential for the integrity of the brain, nerves, glands and internal organs. We can do without food for weeks and without water for days, but without oxygen, we will die within a few minutes. If the brain does not gets proper supply of this essential nutrient, it will result in the degradation of all vital organs in the body. Oxygen is critical to our well-being, and any effort to increase the supply of oxygen to our body and especially to the brain will pay rich dividends.

Breathing is so simple and so obvious we often take it for granted, ignoring the power it has to affect body, mind and spirit. With each inhale we bring oxygen into the body and spark the transformation of nutrients into fuel. Each exhale purges the body of carbon dioxide, a toxic waste. Breathing also affects our state of mind. It can make us excited or calm, tense or relaxed. It can make our thinking confused or clear.

When you begin your day take in a deep breath and take in the moment.

Thank you for your patronage.

Have a sensational week ahead!

You don't have to buy from anyone.
You don't have to work at any particular job.
You don't have to participate in any given relationship.
You can choose.

or in a distant time to come.
You hold the tiller.

You can decide to alter the course of your life at any time.
No one can ever take that away from you.
You can decide what you want and go after it.

Your Mind Matters Most
four must do's for a good mood

Your brain is like the computer controller of the rest of your body, it sends signals, gets feedback, circulates hormones, regulates your nervous system, and much more. Some make an analogy that the brain is like the hardware and the mind like software. Without debate, they work synergistically and your mind relates to your mental state. Sadly though, many people suffer from mental disorders. October 7-13, 2012 is National Mental Health Week though the National Association of Mental Illness ( NAMI ). Depression is said to be the most common mental disorder and one of the world's leading causes of disability, and affects 350 million people globally according to the World Health Organization. If left untreated depression can lead to suicide, which is now the leading cause of injury mortality and has surpassed motor vehicle traffic deaths. These are just a few things to consider talking to your doctor to help evaluate if there are some imbalances contributing to the feelings of depression.

1. Take Active Vitamins:  B vitamins come in many forms and do many functions. They are critical to helping us modulate our stress response. Low levels of folic acid can cause feelings of depression. Some people have low levels of folic acid, either due to a medication depleting it such as oral birth control, low dietary intake, low absorption, or a genetic defect with making it into the active form that your body needs. Consider taking a B vitamin that lists: methylcobalamin (active B12), and 5 MethylTetraHydroFolate (5 MTHF, active folate).

2. Check Your Blood: Getting an annual check up is important to catch things before they get too far gone. Evaluating your thyroid function is important, because if it is not at optimal levels, it can leave you feeling low energy, depressed, overweight, along with feeling cold and losing your hair. There is more than one test to look at though, don't just rely on TSH, also look at Free T3 and Free T4 which are the hormones your thyroid produces. Anemia can also cause fatigue. Naturopathic Doctors do an excellent job at fully evaluating blood work from a functional not just disease prospective.

3. Take Time to Feel: Life is like a rollercoaster, it is normal to have fluctuations of highs and lows. It is important to take time to feel your emotions, versus suppressing them. Sharing your feelings with friends, family or a counselor is important. Journaling can be helpful to work through some difficult feelings or situations.

4. Forgive: Forgive yourself first and foremost for anything you beat yourself up about. Forgive others. Practicing forgiveness is vital for not only good mental health but overall health too. Try the tapping technique if you are struggling like Emotional Freedom Technique, which is a simple, and effective tool to help clear out anxiety, and aid in other mental or physical pains.

Your mind is what makes you, you and unique, and it is beautiful!

Back in the Driver’s Seat

Simply going through the motions of life puts us directly in the passenger seat when we should really be in the driver’s seat.

It’s easy to go through this fast-paced world feeling as if you are being dragged through your weeks on the back of a wild horse. Many of us go from one thing to another until we end up back at home in the evening with just enough time to wind down and go to sleep, waking up the next morning to begin the wild ride once more. While this can be exhilarating for certain periods of time, a life lived entirely in this fashion can be exhausting, and more important, it places us in the passenger’s seat when really we are the ones who should be driving.

When we get caught up in our packed schedule and our many obligations, weeks can go by without us doing one spontaneous thing or taking time to look at the bigger picture of our lives. Without these breaks, we run the risk of going through our precious days on a runaway train. Taking time to view the bigger picture, asking ourselves if we are happy with the course we are on and making adjustments, puts us back in the driver’s seat where we belong. When we take responsibility for charting our own course in life, we may well go in an entirely different direction from the one laid out for us by society and familial expectations. This can be uncomfortable in the short term, but in the long term it is much worse to imagine living this precious life without ever taking the wheel and navigating our own course.

Of course, time spent examining the big picture could lead us to see that we are happy with the road we are on, but we would like more time with family or more free time to do whatever we want at the moment. Even if we want more extreme changes, the way to begin is to get off the road for long enough to catch our breath and remember who we are and what we truly want. Once we do that, we can take the wheel with confidence, driving the speed we want to go in the direction that is right for us.
