reinventing the Sunday dinner

Every time I visit my massage therapist, which is never often enough, I notice a lithograph she has on her wall. It says “Share Your Table”. While I have never asked exactly what it means, when she is kneading my sore muscles my mind wanders to what it means to me.

With the fast pace in which society moves we have allowed certain traditions to go by the wayside. One of these traditions is “Sunday Dinner”. I remember as an adolescent my mother preparing dinner with great care then our family sitting down to good home cooked meal and conversations. Regardless of faith, Sunday is always a great day for some kind of reflection and gathering. For some it is revered as the Sabbath for others it is the beginning of the week and a good time to mentally prepare for the week ahead.

When engaging in a Sunday dinner, consider making it a potluck. If you are not familiar with potluck, I assure you it has little to do with pot or luck for that matter and has more to do with having each guest bringing a dish. A Sunday potluck dinner has benefits twofold.

  • It gives us all an opportunity to learn new recipes and tastes. It also gives us an opportunity to perhaps pass healthy eating habits forward thus improving the quality of the lives of people that surround us.
  • In a world that sometimes appears to be divisive and menacing, Sunday dinner brings us all together in a common and collective cause. It gives us the strength of numbers and prepares us to brave the week ahead with new friends and supporters behind us.

In a blog post I was reading, one person wrote about a Sunday dinner he has hosted, rain or shine, for over 30 years straight. This is what one of the guests had to say. “People from all corners of the world come to break bread together, to meet, to talk, connect and often become friends. All ages, nationalities, races, professions gather here, and since there is no organized seating, the opportunity for mingling couldn't be better. I love the randomness.”

It only takes one person with vision, persistence and leadership to create a movement. Make Sunday dinner a movement and see how it transforms lives. 5 Tips to Get Clean

Detox, short for detoxification, is becoming a main stream term and way of life for many. Our environment is drastically different now then ever before with so many new chemical exposures, cars, electromagnetic fields (EMF's), etc. The human body is naturally designed to always return to homeostasis, however, it can be trouble some when it is over burdened with a toxic environment and way of life. There are 2 detox pathways that are used by the liver, both of which require plenty of nutrients, including folic acid, glutathione, B2, B3, B6, B12, Vitamins A, C, & E, and amino acids, amongst others. A detox can range from a few simple changes, or can be a complete program lead by a physician. Here are a few things you can do on your own that will help clean up your act:

  1. Abstain from Alcohol: All toxins, medications, supplements, hormones, etc get processed by your liver. The liver works very hard at just the normal day to day stuff and alcohol is very toxic. Go on a 3 week hiatus from the booze, now is a good time before the holidays hit!
  2. Be Aware of Your Environment: Do you live in an old house? Are you remodeling? Do you wear perfume? Do you breathe in smoke? Problems like mold, or off gases from new carpet and other textiles can release lots of chemicals in your home. Have some house plans such as a spider plant or certain ferns that clean up the air. If you like wearing a scent, switch to essentials oils which are free from toxins. Do you best to breathe in clean air.
  3. Your Mind Matters: Do you have negative self talk? Our emotions and beliefs can effect the expression of our cells (Book: Biology of Belief by Bruce Lipton). Do you have old emotions, like those from childhood, that still cause stress for you today? Your mind is most likely your best asset. Take care of it, and go talk to someone to sort out any stresses that are here.
  4. Eat Liver Supportive Foods: For your next grocery store trip, if you shop at a large retailer vs a natural foods store, shop on the perimeter of the store, hitting the produce and meat areas. Pick up spinach, asparagus, avocado, bananas, oranges, pomegranates, chicken and salmon. All of these foods are higher in the nutrients your liver needs for the detoxification pathways.
  5. Home Hydrotherapy: Hydrotherapy is an ancient healing technique that uses water, sometimes in the alteration of hot and cold applications to help blood perfusion and thus bring oxygen and nutrients to the tissues. Take a warm bath and add Epsom salts (contain magnesium) to it. (Caution: do not do if you have heart trouble, diabetic or feel tired and weak.) Pat dry vs rub so the toxins that have seeped out onto the skin get on the towel and not rubbed back in. Remember your skin is like a sponge, what you put on it, soaks in.

Putting yourself first means that it may be necessary to say no to someone else in order to say yes to yourself.

We have all heard the instructions of an airline attendant reminding us to put on our own oxygen mask before we help anyone else with theirs. This advice is often cited as a metaphor for self-care because it so accurately expresses why it is important. It seems to say, ironically, that if you can’t take care of yourself for yourself, do it for others. Few situations in our daily lives mimic the wake-up call of an airplane emergency, so it’s easy to keep putting self-care off—easy, that is, until we get sick, overwhelmed, or exhausted, and suddenly don’t have the energy to care for the people who count on us. That’s when we realize we haven’t been getting the oxygen we need to sustain ourselves. We begin to understand that taking care of ourselves is neither selfish nor indulgent; it’s just plain practical.

Putting yourself first means that it may be necessary to say no to someone else in order to say yes to yourself. For many of us, there is always something we feel we could be doing for someone else, and it helps to remember the oxygen metaphor. You can even encourage yourself by saying “I am caring for myself so that I am better able to care for others” or some other mantra that will encourage you. It also helps to remember that self-care doesn’t have to be composed of massively time-consuming acts. In fact, the best prescription for taking care of yourself is probably small, daily rituals; for example, taking one half-hour for yourself at the beginning and end of the day to meditate, journal, or just be. You might also transform the occasional daily shower or bath into a half-hour self-pampering session.

Whatever you decide, making some small gesture where you put yourself first every day will pay off in spades for you and the ones you love. The oxygen you need is all around you; sometimes you just need to be reminded to breathe.

Serves: 2
Serving Size: 1 cup
Carbs Per Serving: 18.8 g
Prep Time:<10 minutes

Skill Level: Super Easy

1 small frozen banana, sliced
3/4 cup kale, stems removed

3/4 cup almond milk
