Terms of Empowerment

finding personal power from within

There are those who do and those who don’t. Which one are you?

As a business owner who is also an employer, I have to deal with a lot of personalities. It is part of the job. It is also, I feel, part of my responsibility to help grow the people I have working with me. The only way I have found to be effective is to lead by example and hope for their empowerment. I don’t have many rules except for tell the truth, a fair days pay for a fair day of work and never ever use the words “that’s not my job”.

When I run into a situation where I have one of my team members not live up to their promise with me, I take it very hard as a personal failure. I ask myself, “what could I do better to help this person take ownership in their role”. To keep from losing my mind I have an ever growing list of things I can to help empower others and lo and behold, it ends up empowering me. Here’s a few I use.

  • Eliminate the word “no” and embrace the word yes.
  • Do at least one thing every day to improve yourself.
  • Commit to being of service.
  • Strive for excellence.
  • Be part of something bigger than yourself.
  • Be generous.
  • Be considerate.
  • Be more today than you were yesterday.
  • See the best in others.
  • See the best in yourself.

Make a list of your own. I think you will find when you start it will be hard to stop. And as you feel yourself becoming empowered it will become contagious.
